Kim Miljus

Kim Miljus is managing director of Global North East. She graduated from Newcastle Polytechnic in 1980 and worked in print media sales and marketing before finding her career home in commercial radio. Kim initially worked as a key account manager at Metro Radio Group before rising through the ranks to station director. Kim joined Global Media and Entertainment in 2011, as managing director for the North East. In the role, Kim oversees the running of all Global Brands in the region, including Heart and Capital FM

What was your first break in business? 

After graduating from university I was eager to start working, but had no idea what I was going to do with my HND in Business Studies. I remember sitting in the sales director’s office at The Journal for a display advertising sales position. In my nervousness I asked when he wanted me to start? Years later he told me, with a close like that, I was destined for a career in sales.

What did you want to be growing up? 

An actress on the stage in musical theatre.

What attracted you to your current role? 

I was approached by Global Media and Entertainment in 2011 to head up Capital FM, the brand-new station launching in the North East. Backed by a ground breaking and innovative television campaign – featuring some of the world’s biggest pop stars – it was an easy decision. I was hugely impressed by the ambition and vision of owner Ashley Tabor and the company’s investment strategy to revolutionise the commercial radio industry.

What is the company’s mission? 

To be the best media and entertainment company in the UK. At Global, we live by our obsessive statement, which drives our mission. It lives and breathes in our day-to-day work, is key to our annual performance reviews, and is even painted in giant letters on our broadcast centre walls. The statement is all about striving to make each detail right, busting a gut to deliver for our customers, having the courage to say when something isn’t good enough, and daring to try the never-been-tried-before! These ‘behaviours’ aren’t just platitudes, they mean something and are relatable to the people who work in the business.

How do you get the best out of your team? 

I love my team. Every day they amaze me with their creative ideas, passion, dedication and commitment to be the best. I’ve ensured we all have a common purpose, clear goals and challenging work and that everyone feels valued and listened too. I also reward often and celebrate that success with lots of fun activities.

What has been your career highlight? 

I’ve been lucky to lead teams that have won many awards of recognition, but winning the Broadcast Centre of the Year at the prestigious and companywide Global Awards at the end of my first year with Global was my proudest yet.

What has been your biggest challenge? 

The way we consume media today is very different from what it was, even five years ago. These changes are a massive challenge but it’s one which Global has embraced, with huge investment into technology, marketing, and the development of our people. We now deliver products that are relevant to today’s listeners, via platforms including the Capital App.

Who or what inspires you? 

Ashley Tabor, owner of Global. I’ve never met anyone with his level of passion, drive and courage. Also, my creative team and my amazing daughters, Nina and Sasha.

What are Global’s short and long-term goals? 

To grow our audience, revenue and fund raising for our charity Global’s Make Some Noise. Our long-term goal, is to support and develop our people, to grow to be the best they can be, to ensure we build the best media and entertainment company in the UK.

How do you achieve a good work/life balance? 

I don’t. The line between work and life is somewhat merged. I love my work, and therefore, it is a huge part of my life. But I’m lucky to have a holiday cottage on the most beautiful beach in the world at Newton-by-the-Sea. This is my place to readjust and achieve equilibrium. With no TV, phones or internet allowed – there’s just the sound of the waves crashing on the beach and, of course, the radio for entertainment.
