Maintaining engineering skills at TyneMet

Ensuring the College offers the very latest skills and qualifications that meet industry demands, the engineering department at TyneMet has recently begun to offer an Engineering Maintenance qualification, the College works closely with a number of leading employers across the North East and beyond, who operate on a global scale and recommend the training delivered at TyneMet College.

NESTLE and ERIKS support has meant that the College was able to facilitate this qualification and ensure a curriculum that is set with employers needs in mind.

Engineering Teacher at TyneMet; Paul Cottiss said: “We are delighted to have received the maintenance machinery from NESTLE and ERIKS. This is a very welcome donation and means we can provide a deep practical learning experience to our students who will very much benefit from contact with the machinery.”

Students at TyneMet have access to first-class learning facilities, with spacious workshops, classroom spaces and computers to assist with class work and engineering design skills including CAD/CAM work, mean that studying engineering at TyneMet sets individuals up extremely well for the world of work.

Adam Ord,17, who is studying a maintenance, commissioning and installation course at TyneMet said: “The new machines from NESTLE and ERIKS have really helped to advance my understanding of the subject area and prepare me for when I move into employment. I’ve always known I wanted to work in Engineering, the facilities and equipment at TyneMet are really impressive! I am hoping to move onto an apprenticeship after college, I feel it’s a great way of learning on the job in a practical environment.”

Asset Maintenance Manager, Dale Green, from Nestle said: “Nestle Fawdon’s Engineering Apprentices attend Tyne Met and over the past few years we have built up a strong relationship. When I heard about Paul’s plans to develop and offer an Engineering Maintenance qualification I immediately thought we could help. I spoke to Eriks who are our key Maintenance/Repair/Overhaul supplier and they were just as keen to offer some support. It will give students a great opportunity to work on and understand equipment found in most engineering environments.”
