Marco Pierre White officially opens new Durham Steakhouse

Over 70 guests enjoyed a glass of fizz, three course meal and a meet and greet with Marco Pierre White on Monday 16th April at the official launch of the new Durham Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar & Grill.

Situated within the recently redeveloped Old Shire Hall, which is now home to the boutique, four star Hotel Indigo, the restaurant treats guests to signature steaks, timeless English and French classics, and a comprehensive selection of premium cocktails, all delivered with Marco’s unique flair.

The menu is exclusively curated by Marco himself; to suit all tastes, it typically includes a mix of childhood favourites and modern day delicacies – ranging from the Classic 1970’s Prawn Cocktail and The Governor’s Steak and Ale Pie, to Baked Camembert and a selection of 35-day aged native breed steaks. Marco’s ethos is all about classic dishes, simply cooked using the best locally sourced ingredients.

Speaking of the Durham restaurant, Marco said: “Durham is a very special place to me, as although I live in the South of England, I am originally from Leeds, so whenever I travel north I feel as though I am coming home. Durham is a magical place and apart from the Cathedral, I think the Old Shire Hall is one of the most magical buildings, the visual impact is gorgeous.

“When you create a restaurant in a listed building you have to take into consideration the past and the natural beauty of the building. It’s all about the impact for the diners, and when you walk through the doors of the restaurant you feel the magic, in the tiles, the soft furnishings and the glamour of the building itself.”

He continued: “My mother once told me a tree without roots is wood, therefore we must look after people. This is important to me and the premise of the Steakhouse, Bar & Grill is based on looking after our diners. We want to create an authentic experience, with no-nonsense food. It’s about creating a night-out atmosphere where our diners can relax with good food, in great company, and enjoy themselves.”

John and Lisa Galley from Durham, visited the restaurant for the first time on Monday. John said: “Years ago I used to work opposite the hotel, and have previously worked in the Old Shire Hall, so I was interested to see the transformation.”

Lisa added: “The building is beautiful, and when you walk into the restaurant, the setting and décor is fabulous. It’s about time Durham had something like this.”
