A team that pushes the boundaries

Multi-award winning businesswoman Vivien Herrera-Lee hopes to add even more accolades to her collection thanks, she says, to the dedication of her team

Established 15 years ago with only two apartments, Properties Unique now offers a portfolio of more than 70 properties in the North East, providing luxury serviced accommodation to business and leisure travellers visiting the region.

One of Properties Unique’s penthouse apartments has now been shortlisted for the North East’s Hidden Gem Award by eviivo, in its annual celebration of Britain’s world-class accommodation. But that’s not all – eviivo has been so impressed with the service provided by Vivien and her 11-strong team that Properties Unique has been shortlisted for the national Multi-Property Wizard Award, too.

Vivien also holds a Businesswoman of the Year award – which she likes to think she received for all the blood, sweat and tears it takes to run and develop a successful business. Her team, however, tells her it was for “flying the flag for senior citizens with ‘attitude’!”

Vivien says: “I’m so very proud of Properties Unique’s unrivalled reputation for outstanding customer service, and I wholeheartedly acknowledge that this is due to the personal contribution of each and every member of my team, including all the external contractors we work with.”

Every member of the Properties Unique team plays their own special role in the business and will always go the extra mile, whether it’s arranging to have a bespoke step made to help a 92-year-old client access the shower or buying a pushchair for a family that had inadvertently left their own at home.

“It’s vital to me that our guests know they are cared for and nothing is a bother to us,” Vivien adds.

It’s Vivien’s genuine care for people that has resulted in her being held in such high esteem, not only by her guests, but also by her staff, who describe her as an appreciative and charismatic boss who gives attention to the smallest detail.

The feeling is mutual, as Vivien’s affection for her staff is clear.

“I’m incredibly proud of my dedicated team who all have a heart of gold,” she says.

“Each of the team has their own responsibilities, but successfully work together in their efforts to make sure nothing is ever left undone. With individual personalities, the chrysalis I see, however, is that they all have a genuine sense of care and compassion… and they make an excellent cup of tea!”

Among her many commitments, Vivien offers continuous support to various charities, one of which, COCO, is particularly close to her heart. It is through this support that Vivien met the charity’s CEO, Lucy Kendall, whom Vivien admires a great deal.

Vivien explains: “People of true principle, like Lucy, inspire me beyond words with their genuine concern to give a better life to those who are not as fortunate as we are.

”Despite modern technology playing a vital role in the workplace, Vivien remains a staunch advocate of the ‘old school’ approach.

“I much prefer to meet people face-to-face, so they know that what I promise will be honoured by both myself and my team,” she says.

It is this collective work ethic that has seen the steady expansion of Properties Unique, and the team is keen to add more properties to the company’s portfolio in a bid to meet growing demand.

Vivien cheerfully expresses an invite: “To any investors out there who’d like us to manage their property, please do give us a call!”

She concludes: “Despite the ongoing social, economic and cultural challenges we all face on a daily basis, we are proud that Properties Unique continues to brave all these elements, progressively growing stronger each year.”
