Joel Dickinson, operations director at Karpet Mills, reveals how the skills of the team have helped develop the 140-year-old business

Karpet Mills recently celebrated its 140th year of business, and it has given the team a chance to reflect on how we have maintained our success for such a long period of time, while continuing

to grow and adapt the company to stay at the top of the sector.

Established in 1878, the company has six generations of experience to draw upon and has ridden the peaks and pits of the North East’s retail economy over the decades.
With five outlets operating across the region,
a thriving commercial arm and a brand new, purpose-built head office facility unveiled in late 2018, the business and our team is growing faster than ever.

Central to the success of Karpet Mills has always been our dedicated and hardworking sales force; they are the real heart and soul of the business. Many of our staff have been in the flooring trade for their whole careers and some have seen three different generations of Dickinsons at the helm.

Professional sales is a difficult skill to perfect. The people of the North East are famed for their real grit, determination and work ethic, but we have recognised that this needs nurturing in order to make a great salesperson.

The breadth and depth of experience in our team is second to none. The knowledge base and skill set required to thrive in the flooring retail sector is not something that can be picked up overnight. It takes years to hone and perfect – something that we are continually striving to improve across our workforce.

The growth of the business has seen a focused and ever-evolving programme of training for our staff. We continuously invest in our team, helping each and every one of them to develop their skills in order to reach their maximum potential. By setting targets and goals for our staff, they all have something to strive towards but perhaps more importantly, opportunities to grow and learn, no matter how long they have been working in the industry. When new staff join our team, we make a conscious effort to ensure the learning process is two-way; there is always something new to know.

One of the main factors that sets us apart from our competition is our level of customer service and genuinely expert advice. Our staff pride themselves on providing our customers with the right answer, rather than trying to simply make
a quick sale. We firmly believe that this is one of the main reasons why so many of our customers return back to us year after year and why we have continued to be so successful over the last 140 years.
