Finding tech talent

April 2, 2018

Newcastle-based BMC Recruitment Group launched a technology division in 2016 to complement its executive search, finance and sales and marketing offering. Now, led by Aqueel Ahmed, senior technology consultant at BMC, the fast-growing recruitment provider has plans to further develop and expand its technology service

In 2016, BMC was successfully supporting businesses with search recruitment solutions across a wide cross-section of industries. However, the strength of the North East’s tech scene meant that the recruitment firm’s clients were increasingly coming from within the digital and technology sector.

The team at BMC was also regularly hearing about their clients’ struggles to source talent in a highly candidate-driven market. And so, confident that the network-based and process-driven search model would transfer well, BMC launched a technology division to address this market.

BMC Recruitment Group now works with some of the North East’s leading technology businesses, which are at the forefront of the sector, clients such as Sage, Performance Horizon, Mediaworks and Visualsoft, to name but a few.

Working with such a range of technology businesses from international PLCs, to high growth prospective unicorns and start-ups, gives BMC excellent insight into the North East tech talent pool and the challenges that tech businesses face in attracting that talent.

Aqueel Ahmed joined the leading recruitment provider in February 2018 to head up the expansion phase of BMC’s technology division. He says: “I was attracted to BMC by the strength of their reputation in the technology market as a high integrity search provider and by the scale of their ambition. We plan to accelerate the growth of our technology division significantly in 2018, with an already strong client base and by expanding our team of consultants.”

Aqueel brings nearly ten years of experience to BMC within the technology recruitment sector and a notable career within the commercial space before that.

He adds: “Newcastle itself has a thriving, and fast-growing tech economy, which will only be enhanced by the impending launch of the JEREMIE 2 funds and the increased access to the investment that will provide. There is real momentum behind the North East tech economy and it’s important the region capitalises on that and establishes itself as a key player in the UK’s technology agenda.”

BMC Technology covers multiple IT disciplines across the tech and digital sectors. This includes a wide range of development, IT support and infrastructure, systems and data roles, as well as senior IT management and board level roles.

Enjoying 100 per cent year-on-year growth, BMC works with five of the North East’s seven largest businesses and is already working with, and engaging with, tech businesses regionally and nationally.

Now into its third year as a business, BMC Recruitment Group maintains the outlook and energy of a challenger brand in the highly competitive world of recruitment.

They have successfully placed talent for nearly 100 clients, grown from two people to sixteen-strong, and delivered exclusive international projects.

BMC managing director, David Blair, says: “The North East is fast becoming a hotbed for tech, creative and digital companies attracted to the region by a host of factors that make it an attractive place to live and do business. This includes the talented candidates that reside here and we take great pride in helping our clients to unearth that talent and in replenishing the talent pool with candidates from outside of the region. We look forward to supporting our clients with their ongoing growth plans now and in the future.”
