“It would be an understatement to say that opening a brand new 138 bedroom hotel didn’t feel pressurised, but a year on, I can’t believe how successful it has become,” says Mark Winter, general manager of the Holiday Inn Express Middlesbrough, which overlooks the beautiful Centre Square.
Mark cites his “great team” as the reason for the venue’s success and the reason it is already extending its facilities – adding more bedrooms – just one year on.
He says: “The hotel market is buoyant in Middlesbrough so the extension will help us meet the healthy demand for rooms.
“The leisure market, in particular, is showing promising signs, while Middlesbrough Football Club’s promotion to the Premier League has been a big boost in terms of bringing more visitors into the town.”
Mark explains that he and the team set out to provide a high standard of service with a ‘can do’ attitude at the new internationally branded hotel.
Since a phased opening in August 2015, Marks feels that the hotel has certainly made its mark within the town.

Mark continues: “We also recognised early in the process that the hotel was about supporting our ‘local neighbourhood’, too.
“We know that our hotel guests will want to explore, so the team personally check out local restaurants and cafés, and keep a close eye on events that are happening in the area – something our customers love.”

“The hospitality industry, traditionally, means long hours, but we have a rule that we all sit down on a very regular basis and talk about our successes and what we want to achieve.
