Former Chartered accountant David Blair has used his knowledge and experience of the finance industry to build a successful North East search consultancy. Now, the managing director of BMC Recruitment Group, David has his sights set on new sectors and national and international growth…

David Blair qualified as a Chartered accountant with KPMG and spent his early career working in corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions, first with UNW and then with Newcastle College Group.

But when an opportunity arose to lead a fledgling recruitment company, David decided to try something new.

“I was approached by a group of investors who I had previously advised,” David explains. “They were investing in a recruitment company and asked if I would be interested in leading it, with the aim of scaling the business.”

Having worked on some high profile recruitment transactions as a corporate finance advisor, it was a sector that David had always had a keen interest in, so the chance to apply that knowledge and the broader experience of advising high profile businesses was too good of an opportunity to turn down.

David immediately set about instigating major change within the business.

This included relocating the business from Stockton to Newcastle, rebranding it to BMC Recruitment Group, and changing its focus away from solely engineering to other professional disciplines, including finance – a sector he knew well. David recruited a new team with extensive experience of the local recruitment market, and switched the primary focus to the North East.

“I wanted to build a solid base within the North East, before expanding nationally and internationally, by utilising my relationships and network I had built as an accountant and those of the consultants who had come on board,” David explains.

David’s strategy has proved very successful and over the past two consecutive years, BMC Recruitment Group has achieved 100 per cent growth, worked and is working with major clients, from home-grown SME’s to multinational organisations, and seen its team swell from two to 15.

David puts the company’s success down to a transparent, highly process-driven approach.

“Perhaps because of my accounting background, we are very focused on the detail of how we do things,” he explains. “We’re ISO 9001 accredited and have our processes audited to understand where we can make improvements to our service.”

BMC Recruitment Group can count some of the North East’s largest businesses as its clients, such as Nissan, Sage, Arriva, Bellway and Proctor & Gamble – and candidates alike, which highlight BMC’s success in delivering a personal, high energy service.

“We’re pretty obsessive when it comes to communicating to our clients and candidates exactly what we have done and are doing for them,” David says.

Having established its credentials in financial recruitment and executive search at a local level, BMC Recruitment Group has also successfully branched out into several new sector including technology, HR, engineering and sales and marketing.

The company has enjoyed exclusive contracts with two international clients as part of global expansion plans, with plans to enter new markets both in the UK and further afield.

This year, David is aiming to double turnover again in 2018 and to recruit additional staff to support growth plans. He is also hoping to expand the company’s national and international market share.
