Individuals, families and businesses are encouraged to help unlock £250,000 in match giving for regional community causes.
The money is being made available by the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland through its Mr Murray’s Million Pound Match scheme. The foundation is seeking people and businesses willing to establish a fund to support a community cause.
For every £2 contributed to an endowment fund, the foundation will add an extra pound.
Sandra King, chief philanthropy officer at the Community Foundation, says: “This is a significant amount of money that could make a big difference to lives across our region – we just need help to unlock it. This is a real opportunity for people and businesses in the North East to change the world on their doorstep.”
Since launching the scheme last year, the foundation has helped donors set up or grow funds with gifts worth over £1 million, adding an extra £500,000 in match, with more pledged.
The funds have already helped stroke survivors in County Durham, young musicians in Northumberland and local people at a community café in Byker, Newcastle.
The foundation is now working with Pattinson Estate Agents, using its funding expertise and community knowledge to help the North East company establish a fund to tackle homelessness.
Keith Pattinson says: “To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the firm, my daughter and I decided to do something special and establish a fund at the Community Foundation which will help us give back to the area in which we have grown as a business.
“The match really made a difference, increasing our donation by 50 per cent. I founded Pattinson Estate Agents on 4 July 1977, and have witnessed huge changes in the housing market. Sadly, one thing that hasn’t changed is the members of our community who are homeless and need our support.”
Sandra adds: “Over three decades, the Community Foundation has helped people and businesses support their communities. Many had the will to give, but didn’t know the best way. We use our expertise and knowledge of the region’s needs and causes – many of which struggle to attract funding – to help these donors make a difference, unleashing their power to do good.”
What is a community foundation?
Community foundations are independent charities dedicated to making a difference in specific places. They work with people and organisations to create sustainable community funds which support a wide range of causes. Across the globe there are nearly 1800: some covering a city or county, others championing a bigger region. The Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland is the largest of 46 in the UK, where the scheme has established an unrivalled track record of leadership and insight enabling donors to make an impact in their area.
What is an endowment fund?
When someone sets up an endowment fund they build a lasting foundation on which communities can grow. Their gift is invested, with revenue earned every year to support vital causes. Over time, the value of support provided from an endowment fund will outstrip the original gift, making a legacy for the community that will go on forever.
