UNW hosted its annual employment taxes and law update with a Star Wars twist on April 24 at Tyneside Cinema.
UNW partner Lee Muter was joined by Jamie Gamble, partner at law firm Ward Hadaway, to discuss prominent issues impacting employment tax and law.
Lord Vader himself was also present to welcome guests into the seminar.
More than 100 attendees from a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, property, not-for-profit and engineering attended the event at The Electra room, as Lee made his way up to present first, accompanied by The Imperial March soundtrack. During his presentation, he covered a wide array of topics including National Minimum Wage (NMW), Optional Remuneration Arrangements (OpRA) and Termination Payments.
Welcomed to the stage by the far friendlier tones of the Mos Eisley Cantina Band, Jamie presented Episode II: Employment Law, with content ranging from employment status case law and holiday pay to the arrival of GDPR in late May.
After the presentation, Lee and Jamie both addressed questions from the audience.
Lee left the audience with a few key messages for employers in terms of how to avoid being named and shamed for inadvertently paying below the NMW, how to ensure that P11Ds were completed in line with the new benefit rules involving salary sacrifice and cash allowance.
He also emphasised the importance of considering an employment taxes health check to ensure expenses, benefits and termination payments were being dealt with in line with legislative requirements.
