Independent law firm for businesses Muckle LLP has built a strong and enviable reputation in real estate, working with Newcastle University on a number of its recent flagship and landmark development projects.
Lawyers recently provided legal advice on Newcastle University’s newest academic facility. Construction has already started on the £40 million development, which will provide a brand new 9000m2, six-storey building on Richardson Road.
The purpose-built building, which is due to open in 2020, will provide teaching and learning facilities for the School of Sport, Exercise and Nutritional Science, and the School of Psychology, along with specialist facilities for the School of Medical Education.
It will feature a lecture theatre for 300 students, social learning spaces, seminar rooms, clinical suites and academic and postgraduate offices.
Muckle also advised Newcastle University on its construction and engineering contract with builders Clugston Construction, procured through the university’s major contracts framework.
Work on the university’s new £25 million state- of-the-art Sports Centre – also on Richardson Road – is due for completion next summer. Designed to provide space for performance and recreational sport alongside academic space for sports research and teaching, the Sports Centre will incorporate facilities for a range of sports and leisure activities. The 5692sq m2 building will include an eight-court sports hall, four squash courts, Sport and Exercise Science Labs, a second strength and conditioning room, spin studio and a gym.
Muckle LLP’s corporate, construction and property experts have also advised Newcastle University since the beginning of Newcastle Helix. Spanning over 24-acres of mixed-use prime city centre development land, the £350 million development is the largest of its kind in the UK and has been dubbed ‘Newcastle’s property deal of the decade’.
The firm’s lawyers have provided legal advice throughout, including work on the Urban Sciences Building, the Learning and Teaching Centre and the National Innovation Centre building.
Muckle LLP Construction partner Lucilla Waugh says: “Newcastle University has embarked on an exciting programme of industry-leading developments which enhance its reputation as one of Britain’s most advanced universities.
“These developments are a tremendous boost to the region and we are delighted to have established a long-lasting relationship with the university. With a strong track record across the fields of corporate, commercial, construction and real estate, we have been able to advise on some of the most complex, innovative and well-loved developments in the North East.”
Richard Dale, executive director of finance at Newcastle University, adds: “Newcastle University’s £500 million investment programme will deliver quality facilities, offering our students a fantastic experience and an excellent environment for learning, teaching and research. Muckle LLP’s specialist knowledge and expertise has been an integral part of bringing these exciting projects to life and we are delighted with the support they have provided.”
