More than 100 legionnaires from all over Europe will be descending upon Hadrian’s Wall for a weekend of invasions, skirmishes and battles

Hadrian’s Wall Live!, organised by English Heritage over the weekend of September 3-4, will see events take place at two attractions along the Wall, including a spectacular re-enactment of a clash between Roman troops and barbarians, and a unique night time patrol by torchlight on the evening of the September 3. Other activities throughout the day at Birdoswald Roman Fort include Roman falconry, theatre performances, gladiator shows and kids’ sword drills.

Special guests at the event will be the 100 strong re-enactment group coming together from all over Europe as well as the English Roman re-enactment group, The Ermine Street Guard. They will be demonstrating combat skills, battle tactics and Roman camp life at Birdoswald Roman Fort throughout the weekend, culminating in an unforgettable re-enactment. The same group will also make an appearance at Housesteads Roman Fort on the Saturday evening, where visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of a Roman legion at dusk in our event entitled ‘Night Time Patrol’.

Carl Hutton, events manager North for English Heritage said: “Last year’s event on Hadrian’s Wall was such a phenomenal success that we’re thrilled to be hosting it again this year.  We’ll be bringing Hadrian’s Wall to life by staging a Roman invasion and visitors can see how life on the edge of the empire would have been like centuries ago as they witness battles and explore camps, taking in the sights and sounds of this mighty force. Tickets are now on sale and we are encouraging people to book their tickets to take advantage of our early bird discount which runs until the August 1.”
