Jo Hand, a previous winner of the Susan Dobson Award for North East Woman Entrepreneur of the Year, kickstarted her career in recruitment over a decade ago and has helped thousands of people find new careers across the UK. She secured a six-figure investment via the Finance for Business North East Angel Fund earlier this year and launched a new brand – The Human Group. Here, Jo discusses what makes her new recruitment agency different
Creating a brand
My decision to launch The Human Group was driven by a desire to add a personal touch to the world of recruitment. Our focus as a team is to create a personalised service for our clients – whether they are job seekers or employers – and this will remain our top priority throughout our business journey. We worked with local companies to launch our new brand, gathering feedback and providing effective solutions to issues that companies regularly find in the recruitment industry. For us, recruitment is all about building relationships, getting to know our candidates and clients and helping them achieve their personal career ambitions and business goals.
It’s a people thing
Our people-focused approach at The Human Group, combined with our recruitment expertise which spans more than 45 years collectively, helps our clients to access the very best talent in the UK. We pride ourselves on our honest approach and our ability to put the right people in the right places. I’ve always believed that people are your greatest asset and to be successful in business you need to have the support of a great team. Andrea Conway heads up the senior management team and with 15 years in the industry is highly experienced, while James Robson is a non-executive director and provides strategic advice, ensuring the business is on track to achieve its growth objectives.
Life in the Tees Valley
I’m extremely proud of my roots in the Tees Valley – Middlesbrough has grown into a town well known for its business support and creative start-ups. As a team, we’re part of multiple business organisations including Tees Valley Business Club, The Entrepreneurs’ Forum and The NEECC. We attend regular events, and being a part of this vibrant business community is something that’s always driven us to do more for our town and the people in it.
The future is bright
We don’t want to be just another recruitment agency, which is why we’re working to add new services to help us stand out from the crowd. We’re pleased to be able to offer HR consultancy, a payroll service and proof of right to work checking as well as drugs and alcohol testing services, and we have plans for more services developing over time.
We have also successfully fulfilled the criteria for a GLAA (Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority) license, which means that we meet the GLAA licensing standards covering health and safety, accommodation, pay, transport and training – something that we’re very passionate about.
We’ve recently opened an additional office in North Yorkshire to allow us to expand our workforce too.
The recruitment industry is competitive, but The Human Group will continue to learn, develop and offer a personalised approach to achieve our client’s success. We have a strong, highly trained team and with ambitious year-on-year growth plans ahead of us I’m excited and focused on building the Human brand.
