North East consultancy James Christopher Consulting is celebrating its most successful year to date after securing a number of exciting new commissions.

The company is currently working with developer Adderstone Group on a number of projects both locally and in London, including high quality student accommodation developments and the five-tower North Shore residential development on Newcastle Quayside.

James Christopher Consulting has also been employed by London-based developer Lumière as structural designers on The Beacon in Hemel Hempstead, an 18-storey highly sustainable £100 million development.

Chris Lee, managing director of the rapidly expanding business explains: “Feedback from our clients was that they really loved our approach and commitment to innovation in our specialised areas of civil, structural and façade engineering, but we felt we would be able to offer more by broadening our services.

“Through our reputation within the industry we were able to attract some really talented people to head up these new departments and are delighted that we now offer full MEP and geotechnical design as core services. In-house multidisciplinary design capability is critical when using BIM (Building Information Management) technology. We now have that.”

James Christopher Consulting has come a long way since Chris set up the company in 2004.

He says: “I had worked for a number of consultancies, both small and multinationals and I wanted to take this experience and use all the best aspects of each to create an exceptional practice with its own identity and culture.

“Before setting up the business I was lucky enough to work with some really talented people and was delighted when both Kris and Craig shared the vision I had and came on board.”

Kris Haigh and Craig Higgins are now both technical directors at James Christopher Consulting.

So what makes this engineering consultancy different from the others operating in the same area of work?

“We do what other consultants do,” says Craig, “but we specialise in the delivery of the unusual, challenging projects where innovation and lateral thinking make the unfeasible become feasible. We challenge the norm to deliver cost-effective solutions.”

Kris adds: “The company has steadily grown and we have a team that has a strong mix of technical skills and experience. We are big enough to hold the skills we need to deliver exceptional design and are also structured to maintain control of projects, to make leading decisions and to take responsibility.”

Office manager Sue Lee explains: “The company has invested heavily in technology, system development and training to assist in effective project delivery, but this is just part of the reason for our success so far. Our focus remains on recruiting the right people and making sure we provide them with support and a creative environment where they can express themselves and reach their potential. Technology is not a substitute for talented people who love what they do.”

Chris concludes: “We have had a really big transition in 2016 and are looking forward to working with our clients in the coming year, with some really exciting projects on the horizon.”
