Michelle Lightfoot established Joe Halliday Recruitment 12 months ago with the aim of providing exemplary customer care for clients and recruits alike. Here, she reflects on her journey so far

You recently celebrated Joe Halliday Recruitment’s first anniversary. How have you found the first year and how has the company developed in this time?

We are very pleased with how successful the first year has been. The celebration was great. We spent quality time with those who have supported Joe Halliday throughout the year. Over 70 per cent of our success has been word-of-mouth and referrals and we are overwhelmed by the positivity we have been given by clients and candidates. It truly is a motivator.

What were your aspirations when you set up the company? Do you feel you’ve achieved these?

I’d worked in the [recruitment] industry for over ten years but became frustrated; I wanted to focus on the quality of customer service rather than sales targets with my own business. Looking at the fantastic feedback and great recommendations we’ve had from clients and candidates since establishing Joe Halliday, this has shown to be the case.

What’s been your highlight of the past 12 months?

My highlight has been growing the team. I’ve employed Angela Thompson as associate director, Indervir Dulai as recruitment specialist and Charlotte Lightfoot as head of social media. Within 12 months, I have established a great workforce. We’ve also forged brilliant partnerships with local and international companies.

What’s been the biggest challenge establishing the company?

At the beginning, the biggest challenge was my family/work life balance but now I have the team, there is not as much pressure on me and I find it easier to maintain the balance.

Recruitment is a competitive marketplace. What makes your company different?

We are a family-run business specialising in engineering, food production, manufacturing nad warehouse and distribution. We have the time and desire to understand the individual needs of the clients and recruits. This enables us to deliver a high-quality service.

What are your plans for the next 12 months; what about your longer-term plans?

We have very exciting plans, such as the launch of a new expansion of Joe Halliday, which will take effect late 2018/early 2019.
We are also delighted to announce that we’re moving into a second office, which will be based in Sunderland. Longer term, our plan is to keep doing what we’re doing and remain focused on proving high-quality customer service.
