Amazon reiterates 1000-job pledge for new Durham warehouse

Online retailer Amazon has reiterated plans to create more than 1000 jobs at a new North East warehouse after unveiling a major recruitment drive.

The operator says its Durham processing centre, near Bowburn, will provide a four-figure number of permanent positions when it opens in the autumn.

Construction of the site, based off the A1, began last year and bosses today (Thursday, September 3) used a UK-wide pledge to deliver 10,000 jobs in 2020 to restate their plans.

The new roles will cover order packing, as well as engineering, HR, IT, finance and health and safety positions.

Stefano Perego, Amazon’s vice president of European customer fulfilment, said: “We’re proud to be creating 10,000 new permanent roles across our UK network of fulfilment centres, sort centres and delivery stations.

“The new robotics fulfilment centres in the North East, as well as the thousands of additional roles at sites across the country, underline our commitment to the people and communities in which we operate.”

Amazon’s Durham warehouse will complement a sister site in Darlington that opened earlier this year, which the company says employs more than 1000 people.
