NHS Business Services Authority celebrates winning prestigious award

A Chief Insight Officer has won a globally-recognised Women in IT award.

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) is celebrating after the work of Nina Monckton, who manages a team based in Newcastle, saw off competition from a number of high profile companies, including Mercedes Benz, Barclays, Heathrow Airport and JUST EAT, to win the Transformation Leader of the Year Award at the fourth annual Women in IT Awards in London last week.

Women were nominated for the award based on their involvement in a major and successful IT or digital transformation over the last 18 months. Nina has worked at the NHSBSA since 2007, and in 2017 was appointed Chief Insight (Data) Officer. Nina led the development of the NHSBSA’s Data Analytics Lab which has identified over £1.2 billion of potential savings and the implementation of cloud analytics to deliver prescription information to over 3,500 NHS users across England.

The Women in IT Awards, organised by Information Age in partnership with Amazon Web Services, celebrate the achievements and innovation of women in technology, where female leader representation stands at only 9%. The Awards aim to tackle this issue, identify new role models and redress the gender imbalance in the IT industry.

Over 1,200 business and technology leaders came together at the Grosvenor House hotel on 30thJanuary to celebrate the successes of women working in technology.

Nina Monckton, Chief Insight (Data) Officer at NHSBSA, said: “It’s a great honour to be recognised in this way and be part of an event which highlights the significant achievements of women working in the IT sector.

“The NHSBSA’s developments in Digital, Insight and Technology have enabled us to develop our services for healthcare professionals and patients, and have helped us to enforce our purpose of being a catalyst for better health. The insights from our data enable us to contribute to improvements within the NHS, impacting positively on patient experience and care.

“It is a shame that the IT sector still has such a noticeable gender imbalance.  Hopefully, showcasing women doing great work in this sector will inspire more girls to study STEM subjects and encourage women already in IT to pursue leadership roles. ”

Niki Dowdall, Managing Director of Events & Marketing and main Board Director at Bonhill Group plc, added: “Women in tech are starting to make significant strides towards equal pay in the workplace. However, they still lag massively behind their male counterparts, and this event serves to address this fact while celebrating those female trailblazers in the industry.

“Technology is a traditionally male-dominated field, but the ‘Women in IT series’ is just one more step towards creating change in the industry. In order to enact change, we need to draw attention to the women who work in the field and especially those who excel.”

The NHSBSA provides central services to NHS bodies, patients and the public, such as managing European Health Insurance Cards, administering payments to pharmacists and dentists and managing the NHS pension scheme.
