Energy Optimisation Solutions in £62 million Teesworks battery venture

Plans have been unveiled to build a £62 million Teesside battery storage base.

Energy Optimisation Solutions (EOS) hopes to create a site on the Teesworks development, near Redcar.

Bosses say the venture would support more than 100 jobs and enable up to 100 megawatts of green energy to be plugged into the national grid.

They say it would help cut annual carbon emissions by 4000 metric tons – the equivalent of driving a car 289 times around the world.

EOS’ blueprint adds to other renewable energy schemes planned for Teesworks, which include blue and green hydrogen production plants and the Net Zero Teesside carbon capture and storage project.

Renewables developer NatPower also recently revealed plans to build a battery energy storage system on the former steelworks site.

Peter Walker, director at EOS, which already oversees a number of battery storage projects, including a 230 megawatt site in South Wales, said: “We’re really looking forward to coming to Teesworks.

“With so much renewable energy development planned for the site, such a supportive environment and such an experienced team in charge, it makes for the ideal location for our next battery storage facility.

“If, as a country, we are going to hit our net-zero ambitions, then energy storage is absolutely essential.

“You can store water in reservoirs and gas in gasometers.

“Battery storage systems mean you can do the same thing with energy generated from renewable sources.”
