180 jobs planned in £17 million Northumberland Estates’ Wynyard supermarket and drive-through development

Multi-million-pound plans have been unveiled for a 180-job Teesside food store and drive-through development.

Northumberland Estates hopes to create a 46,000sq ft food store at Wynyard Park, near Billingham.

The proposals also include two drive-throughs.

Bosses say they expect the supermarket to be “occupied by a high-quality national operator”, with “national chains” also said to be interested in taking on the drive-through bases.

Developers say the scheme will provide much-needed amenities for local residents, who, in the majority, currently travel to nearby Billingham and Stockton for weekly food shopping.

Guy Munden, development planner at Northumberland Estates, said: “This will help to better meet local retail needs, and reduce the need for people to travel to large stores elsewhere.

“With an increasing local population and further planned housing development, Wynyard Park will benefit from new, locally available, retail facilities which cater for weekly food shopping trips.

“This scheme will also help to create significant new employment for the area and make additional land ready to cater for any further demand from operators that emerges.”

The plans also include nine trade counter units and an energy storage compound.

A consultation period has now opened for people to comment on the plans, which can be accessed at www.wynyardretail.co.uk

A planning application is expected to be submitted in late May.
