300 homes could be delivered on Gateshead freight depot site

A freight depot site that has been vacant in Gateshead for 25 years has potential for re-development after a planning application was put in for the construction of 300 new homes.

Gateshead Regeneration Partnership (GRP) submitted planning permission to Gateshead Council about the site just off Felling Bypass.

An initial public consultation held at Gateshead Stadium showed that the plans were well received by local people who are keen to see the brownfield site developed for new homes.

The plans include properties to buy and rent, including 60 apartments in three blocks and 240 two, three and four-bedroom homes.

The layout could also facilitate the building of a community hub, landscaping and open areas, allowing access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Around 15 per cent of the homes would be allocated for affordable rent, through Home Group.

All homes would meet Building for Life, Code for Sustainable Homes level 3 and Lifetime Homes standards, making them suitable for all regardless of mobility and personal need.

Christine Curran, development director for GRP, said: “Our aim is to create a vibrant and sustainable community close to the heart of Gateshead.

“If permission to regenerate this disused brownfield site is granted, we are sure that our ambitious plans to deliver high quality housing options will play a big part in supporting the revitalisation of the town centre.

“Close to excellent transport links and the Quayside, the proposed site offers an exciting opportunity to improve the breadth and availability of new homes in the area.”

The proposed development would form part of a £350 million project being driven by the GRP, which comprises Gateshead Council, Vistry Partnerships North and Home Group.
