Durham Tees Valley Airport unveils first Spanish flights for seven years

Durham Tees Valley Airport has revealed its first Spanish flights for seven years.

The base will run a weekly summer service to Majorca from July 2020 after agreeing a deal with JetsGo Holidays.

The announcement represents a coup for Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen, who brought the airport, based near Darlington, back under public ownership from Peel Airports.

Mayor Houchen, who fulfilled an election pledge in his deal for the site, said he was thrilled to be offering holidaymakers a window to the Mediterranean from their doorstep.

He said: “Just a few months after buying back our airport, I’m delighted to announce that flights to the UK’s most popular holiday destination will be returning to Teesside.

“With these flights to Majorca next year, JetsGo Holidays has become the latest company to throw its weight behind our airport.

“When kids break up for their summer holidays, families won’t have the slog to Manchester, Leeds or Newcastle to get a great value break – they’ll be able to jet off to Spain from Teesside for the first time in seven years.”

Daniel Reilly, JetsGo Holidays director, added: “We are excited to introduce our Majorca holidays to the residents of the Tees Valley region and beyond.

“We look forward to welcoming the regions residents back to fly on holiday from their local airport in 2020.”

The Majorca announcement comes just weeks after the first holiday flights for five years took off from the airport, when Balkan Holidays began summer charter flights to Bulgaria.

The operator has since confirmed it will run a second summer itinerary from the airport in 2020.
