Karbon Homes reveals 107-property County Durham estate plans

Plans have been unveiled to transform an ex-sports centre into a housing estate.

Karbon Homes wants to build 107 properties at Pelton’s former Roseberry Sports Community College, near Chester-le-Street.

Officials say the estate would significantly boost the area’s affordable housing stock, adding it would create and support around 125 construction and supply chain posts.

The plans include 68 rent-to-buy properties, 31 apartments for over-50s, and eight bungalows.

Lea Smith, Karbon Homes’ development manager, said: “We know there is a need for more affordable housing in the area and we’ve designed a development that meets the needs of the local community, with a mix of property types and sizes to provide options for residents at varying stages of life.

“This includes apartments and bungalows for rent, to help combat the shortage of accessible homes for older residents in the area, alongside family homes to help those who might otherwise struggle to get on to the property ladder.”

If the plans are approved, building work could begin in the autumn, with properties available from spring next year.

Joe Ridgeon, director at Hedley Planning Services, which has submitted Karbon’s proposals to Durham County Council, added: “We want to see the creation of exciting and rewarding housing schemes that leave a long-lasting legacy.

“This one will undoubtedly see a real positive change in this part of County Durham.”
