Karpet Mills and North East Autism Society: a trusted relationship helping people thrive

“We have a very good relationship, and it’s lovely when some of the children stop for a chat.”

Derek Robinson has fitted more floor coverings than he could possibly remember.

There’s one name, though, that immediately comes to mind when recounting his order book.

For a good number of years, the experienced Karpet Mills flooring advisor has worked side-by-side with North East Autism Society, helping the charity maintain its schools, residential homes and Chester-le-Street head office.

From hard wearing, easy-to-clean carpets to contract grade safety flooring, durable office tiles and heavy use vinyl, Derek has overseen a plethora of projects at the operator’s bases, which include Aycliffe School [pictured, above] and New Warlands Farm vocational training centre, near Sacriston.

And each one has been – and continues to be – integral to the organisation’s focus on empowering children, young people and adults.

He says: “The team at North East Autism Society know they can give me a ring and that I’ll come down quickly and measure up for a job.

“But our partnership is more than just a fitting; it’s about trust, reliance and a real closeness.

“For example, when we’re carrying out jobs, some of the older residents will come over for a chat, which is really nice.”

As well as helping the charity deliver its work, however, the partnership – which stretches back 15 years – showcases Karpet Mills’ ability to undertake a wide range of contract projects alongside its more traditional home-based orders.

“We do a myriad of things,” says Derek, who operates out of Karpet Mills’ Gateshead showroom.

He adds: “As our work with North East Autism Society shows, our highly skilled teams work far beyond the residential sector, delivering high-quality flooring for buildings including schools and offices.

“And everything is done to the highest standard.

“When clients work with us, they know we’ll do a very good job.

“The best feedback we get comes from repeat orders.

“If you are doing something in the right way, to a consistently high standard, you get repeat work – and that is what we get.”

Praising Karpet Mills’ support, Lisa Taylor, North East Autism Society marketing manager, said the expertise of Derek and the business’ wider team is a fundamental factor in the charity’s continued provision of exceptional care.

She added: “We are delighted with the work Derek and the team have provided over the years.

“Having trusted suppliers and partners like Karpet Mills is pivotal for North East Autism Society; it allows us to provide the best possible facilities and support to autistic children, young people and adults across the region.”
