New £22 million leisure centre takes shape in Berwick
October 27, 2020
The first phase of work on a new £22.6 million county council funded leisure centre is taking shape in Berwick as the steel structure of the new swimming pool completes.
The state-of-the-art centre will house the five-lane, 25m swimming pool, a teaching pool, leisure pool and spa facilities as well as a new fitness suite, cage and reception area.
Using 430 tonne of steel this first phase of work is a key milestone in the programme that ensures the existing Swan Centre continues to operate at all times until the new facilities open to replace them.
The new swimming pool and fitness suite is expected to open in summer 2021 and the new centre is expected to be fully complete and open to the public late 2022.
David Thompson, regional director for Tolent, said: “It’s great for everyone connected to this site including our partners and the local community, to start and see the makings of what is set to be a fantastic building taking shape.
“This project will not only deliver outstanding leisure and sports facilities but the unique design of the building will be sure to bring interest from far and wide.”
Designed by GT3 Architects, there will also be a new sports hall, indoor bowls and a sensory room. Outside there will be a 3G full-size playing pitch, play park and trim trail and parking for 175 cars.
The new centre is being funded by Northumberland County Council, delivered by Advance Northumberland and will be managed by Active Northumberland.
Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet member with responsibility for Healthy Lives said: “We made a commitment to Berwick residents to provide a top-quality leisure facility and it’s fantastic to see it becoming a reality.
“I’m impressed with the progress we’ve seen on site in recent months. Workers have been able to carry on with this project while adhering to coronavirus guidelines and help achieve another key milestone in our ambitious plans for Berwick.”
Mark Warnes, acting chief executive of Active Northumberland, said: “It’s really exciting to see the leisure centre start to take shape. It will be bright, modern, accessible and inclusive for all ages and abilities.
“I look forward to the day when the doors to these first-class facilities open to the residents of Berwick and the surrounding area.”
