New development of affordable homes in Sunderland gets green light

A brand-new development of more than 100 affordable homes in Sunderland has been given the go ahead by the City Council and will commence in 2020.

Karbon Homes, which has built houses throughout the North East and North Yorkshire, will handle construction of the £20 million project on the former Sunderland College campus in North Hylton.

The new homes will be of different styles and tenures, but will share generous landscaping that will help to knit together a close community feeling.

The housing scheme is set to include both affordable rented homes and rent-to-buy properties, with family homes and bungalows side by side.

Karbon is working alongside architect IDPartnerships on its ambitious plans for the site and work will begin this year.

Ged Walsh, director of development and asset management at Karbon Homes, said: “This project represents a significant commitment from us to developing affordable, high quality homes in the city of Sunderland.

“Adding together this project in North Hylton, alongside a further seven sites we have in the city of Sunderland, Karbon Homes and its partners are looking to build nearly 300 homes in Sunderland, and we look forward to bringing all these projects to fruition.”

Councillor Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “More and better homes are at the heart of our plans for Sunderland.

“Vibrant new communities will absolutely transform our offer as a place to live, and we know that by creating attractive new family homes, we can grow the city, and attract more families – of all shapes and sizes – to choose to live here, and ultimately, work, rest and play in Sunderland.”

Recently, the city of Sunderland has been looking to expand the opportunities for housebuilders establishing new developments.

It has seen much success, with announcements of projects by Avant Homes and Miller Homes, as well as a £90 million investment into 450 properties by Story Homes.
