Prime Newcastle site with potential for iconic development hits market
July 25, 2021
Knight Frank has announced it is marketing a rare development opportunity on East Quayside, Newcastle, which has the potential for an iconic building in a prominent position, overlooking the city’s famous Quayside.
The prime site, on City Road, is suitable for offices, residential and leisure (subject to planning) and has already had detailed proposals drawn up for a 12-storey, striking, curved office scheme, designed by acclaimed international architects, Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG.
The landowner, Rob Cameron, has appointed Knight Frank to sell the site which is a stone’s throw from one of the most renowned waterfronts in Europe and landmarks like the Tyne Bridge, The Sage Gateshead, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Millennium Bridge.
Patrick Matheson, partner at Knight Frank, said: “This is a fantastic, rare opportunity to buy a prime site which is the last remaining development plot left in the sought-after East Quayside area. Because of its position and the lie of the land on the site, it warrants a landmark building.
“The office development proposal designed by BIG gained positive feedback during pre-application discussions with Newcastle City Council and that option is still very much on the table. The site is also suitable for homes and leisure uses and we are expecting strong interest from the market.”
When unveiled in February 2020, the bold plans for the ‘No. 1 Quayside’ office scheme were hailed by some as the third modern icon of the Newcastle skyline – alongside Sir Norman Foster’s The Sage Gateshead and Wilkinson Eyre’s RIBA Stirling Prize winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
If progressed, the office development would bring 107,346 square feet of prime office space to the disused site – potentially creating 1,000 jobs.
Whether offices, leisure or residential, the development occupiers will enjoy unobstructed views across the River Tyne.
