Newcastle airport prepares to welcome one million passengers during summer holidays

Newcastle international airport is preparing to welcome over one million passengers through its doors as the school summer holidays get underway.

With some great upcoming events in the region such as the World Transplant Games, Great North Run, Sunderland Airshow and Northern Pride festival; it is expected that this summer will be busy for inbound tourism as well as outbound.

According to the airport, the most popular international destinations for North East travellers this summer are the Spanish Costas, the Algarve, Turkey, Greece and Dubai.

It is also thought that through hub airports like Heathrow, Amsterdam and Dubai, up to 120,000 passengers will make their way to faraway destinations such as Thailand, Bali, Australia and the US.

Next summer will see German airport Munch added as an international connection hub, with Lufthansa operating a new route from Newcastle starting in February 2020.

The airport’s improved passenger services team will assist over 5000 passengers with reduced mobility this summer – an increase of 25 per cent on 2018.

The ‘hidden disability’ lanyard initiative was introduced last year to aid passengers who needed a little more time and assistance.

For the first time, the airport’s dedicated inbound tourism initiative will also be hoping to inspire tourists from abroad to visit the region through their website, Visit North East England.

“We are always very busy over the summer period and we will be working hard throughout the holidays to ensure that all of our passengers have a pleasant trip – whether it be outbound or coming home.”
