Seven must-try dinner spots in Heaton

The quirky borough of Heaton was recently voted one of The Sunday Times’ best places to live 2024, and with its perfect blend of upmarket style and lovable charm, it’s easy to understand why.

With streets such as Chillingham Road and Heaton Road full to the brim with established favourites and up-and-coming eateries, Heaton is an ideal location for an evening meal.

Situated just outside the city centre – sitting pretty between Jesmond and Byker – Heaton boasts an array of restaurants, cafes and bistros that can tantalise any tastebud.

From a quick bite to an upscale meal, there’s a variety of options that cater to all budgets, cuisines and occasions.

Here, North East Times puts together seven of the best spots for dinner in Heaton.

Flint Pizza & Wine

Flint’s menu may be small, but it sure is mighty. Open Wednesday to Saturday, this gorgeous pizzeria is certainly one of Heaton’s (not so hidden) gems. The dough is made fresh daily, giving it that soft, light texture that is ever-so-moreish and even better dunked into one of its incredible dip options. You can eat in or pre-order takeout via Flint’s website, but we’d recommend booking in advance as this place is extremely popular!

Rebel

Situated on Heaton Park Road, Rebel is an intimate eatery with a seasonal and sustainable menu. A firm favourite for locals, the restaurant is the sister to Ro, home of the iconic patty melts. Open Tuesday to Sunday, Rebel is dog-friendly and the perfect dinner spot for those wanting a fresh, locally-sourced dish. After two years of success, it has recently shifted back to its roots with a mouth-watering new set dinner menu.

Boquerones

Blending traditional and modern cuisines, Boquerones is a much-loved tapas restaurant on Heaton Road, offering a selection of Spanish dishes, wines and cocktails. Much like other restaurants in Heaton, it boasts a relaxed yet intimate atmosphere, without feeling confined. Even better, it offers three tapas for £16.95 during select hours!

Nest

Nest asks its patrons to make themselves at home, citing “indulgent dining doesn’t need to be daunting” – and we couldn’t agree more. With a menu expertly curated by head chef Chris Wood, Nest provides the quality and care of a first-class eatery while leaving any pretentiousness at the door. It offers a variety of set menus, including an evening tasting menu for £69pp and £45 for an accompanying drinks flight. It’s the perfect spot for an extra special tasting experience on Chillingham Road.

New Greek

Opa! From the Greek isles to Chillingham Road, New Greek offers a mouth-watering menu of traditional Greek cuisine. Whether you’re craving a hearty moussaka, tangy tzatziki or perfectly grilled gyros, New Greek promises a culinary journey that transports you straight to the heart of Greece. Delicious, authentic and home-made, it’s a big tick from us!

Zenobia

Part of the Acropolis family, you may recognise Zenobia from Sunday mornings at the Quayside Market. However, this year the acclaimed Arabian street food specialist took a significant step forward by opening its first official premises on Chillingham Road. It means you can now enjoy Zenobia’s authentic flavours and exquisite selection of dishes any day of the week.

The Northumberland Hussar

Hurrah and (Northumberland) huzzah! The Northumberland Hussar is a local pub well renowned for its great selection of drinks and home-cooked meals. Whether you’re in the mood for pizzas, burgers or classic pub grub, The Northumberland Hussar offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes it a top choice for great food and a great time. But, of course, we can’t mention the Hussar without highlighting its famous selection of Canadian poutine. Cheese, chips and gravy, with the option to give it your own little twist – truly a Northerner’s dream!
