Newcastle based car club wins award for industry leading sustainable car fleet

Newcastle based sustainable car club Co Wheels has scooped up Mobility Provider of the Year at the 2021 GreenFleet awards.

The awards took place on the 1st December at the British Motor Museum in Warwick and showcased excellence in environmental practices within the fleet and transport sector.

Co Wheels, which runs the UKs largest fleet of electric and hybrid vehicles won the accolade which celebrates exceptional efforts to make low CO2 models widely accessible and demonstrate a robust environmental policy.

The win comes after the pay as you go car club published its groundbreaking social impact report, which found that Co Wheels cars give off 54% less emissions than the average privately owned car in the UK.

After accepting the award, Robert Schopen, Partnerships Manager, said: “It is such an honor to be named Mobility Provider of the Year. The award comes after a year of hard work from the team, after a year packed with new initiatives and climbing membership numbers.”

Co Wheels has supported individuals and businesses in travelling more sustainably, as protecting the climate becomes an increasing priority. Earlier this year Co Wheels partnered with Go North East in an industry first back initiative. The ‘Flexility’ smartcard allows people to house their Co Wheels membership and bus tickets in one place, making sustainable travel across the regional easy and accessible.

Richard Falconer, Managing Director, said: “I am delighted by the win at the recent GreenFleet awards. Alongside all the team at Co Wheels, we have the communities who use our cars to thank.

As a social enterprise, we are closely engaged with every community our fleet calls home.  We have a strong connection with members, to the extent that people and local organisations campaign for our fleet to become a fixture in their communities.”
