Metrocentre announces all new training and skills programme with Gateshead College

Metrocentre Gateshead has announced the launch of an all-new Jump Start Programme to help upskill talent in the region.

The initiative, a long-term partnership between Metrocentre, Gateshead College and Jobcentre Plus, will be available at Metrocentre’s new community space, The Community Hub, to help individuals gain essential work ready skills in retail and hospitality.

Over four days, programme attendees develop awareness of the value of transferrable skills, change management, learn how to build their confidence and deliver excellent customer service in retail and hospitality.

Each learner will develop a personal CV demonstrating their capability, knowledge, experience, and personal qualities appropriate for a career in retail, and will also get practical interview experience.

Most importantly, all participants will be set up with a guaranteed interview after the course with an employer that is actively looking for new staff.

Gavin Prior, Metrocentre centre director, said: “Metrocentre is a key employer in the region so we are delighted that we are able to provide this exciting new training programme to help promote careers in retail.

“This is a fantastic way for individuals to gain valuable experience of what it’s like to work in a dynamic retail environment.

“Delivered on-site in our new training facility, the programme will offer invaluable behind the scenes experience with tours of Metrocentre stores, plus input from leading employers from within the industry.”

Lisa Crow, curriculum leader at Gateshead College, said: “The vision for Jump Start was to create practical, authentic training with a clear link to a job outcome.

“Within walking distance of retail and hospitality brands, learners will get the chance to boost their skills and confidence, then meet experts in the sector and be matched with an employer for an interview at the end of the course, putting them in a better position to secure a job.”

Joanne Inkster, from Gateshead Jobcentre Plus, added: “The Jump Start programme directly connects employer demand with unemployed residents throughout the borough currently receiving out of work benefits and eager to get into work.”

The Jump Start Programme begins on Monday, February 14, and runs every month. For more information, visit  https://www.gateshead.ac.uk/courses/Jumpstart-in-partnership-with-Metrocentre
