A North East car parts maker has appointed a new managing director.

Jim Casey has taken on the role at Nifco UK.

Jim, who joins the business after more than 14 years at seating and e-system maker Lear Corporation, replaces Mike Matthews, who left his position at the start of the year.

Alongside his management team and senior leaders at Nifco Inc, Jim will work to develop and deliver a long-term strategy for the UK business, focusing on its contribution to the Japanese-headquartered company.

Nifco, based at Eaglescliffe, near Stockton, is known for making plastic parts used in engines, interiors and exteriors across a number of marques, including BMW Mini, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar Landrover, Nissan, Renault, Toyota and Vauxhall Opel.

“This is an exciting move for me,” said Jim.

“I have worked in automotive for more than 30 years, and, prior to joining Nifco, have worked my way up from the position of technician to director level roles with multi-site responsibilities.”

Jim said he is confident of building on Nifco’s successes, despite a challenging marketplace where Brexit has had an impact.

“It is no secret, or even surprise, that the automotive industry is experiencing a challenging time at present; it’s an industry that is particularly vulnerable to the impact of Brexit – whatever that may be,” said Jim.

“Nevertheless, I maintain an optimistic stance – challenge presents opportunity for improvement.

“A large part of my remit here is to work with the team to ensure we are running the most efficient and effective operation to safeguard the future of this business – this is something I am eager to get cracking on.”

Nifco operates out of two purpose-built facilities, which represent a total investment of more than £32 million, with more than 600 staff on site at its Durham Lane plant.

Frances Hoy, general manager – HR, added: “We have invested heavily in facilities, equipment, and people skills in recent years and it is a combination of all of these that will see the company continue to be a success on the Tees Valley landscape.

“Jim brings a freshness to the company and will lead the team, maintaining a strong focus on quality and efficiency improvements, training and education, and product design and development.”
