The regeneration of a site overlooking the River Tyne in Ouseburn has moved a step closer following submission of plans for a new £7.5 million apartment complex.
If it gets approval, the move could see the creation of a multi-storey residential scheme on derelict land off St Lawrence Road close to the confluence of the Tyne and Ouseburn rivers and to the east of the Free Trade Inn.
Plans drawn up by McLundie Geddes Architects will see a mix of 50 one, two, three and four-bedroomed apartments, with on-site undercroft parking.
Bosses say upwards of 50 construction jobs could be created if the plans are approved, with further roles created and supported across the supply chain.
The news is the culmination of months of work by planning firm Hedley Planning Services, which has offices in Hexham and Wynyard.
The company’s managing director Sean Hedley has welcomed the planning submission.
He said: “Redevelopment of St Lawrence Road will unquestionably make a meaningful and significant contribution to the local and wider economy, both during the construction and long after families have moved in.
“As planners, we are always keen to see the green light for much-needed, quality and sensible housing development.
“This project ticks all the boxes, and is sure to leave a long-lasting legacy, contributing significantly to an important part of Newcastle.”
