A new list of the top tech talent in the UK has selected ten North East companies in its rankings, ensuring the North East continues its reputation as a hot bed for innovation.
Two firms from the region were featured in the top five: Wordnerds, a Gateshead-based linguistics technology business, featured at three, while Newcastle rail connectivity specialists Nomad Digital were ranked at number four.
The 100 SmartTech Innovators rankings are organised by BusinessCloud and aim to celebrate the top UK disruptor companies who are making waves in their respective sectors.
The rankings were decided by a combination of a judging panel and over 1500 votes from readers.
Mobica, a provider of solutions for the connected devices market based in Wilmslow, Manchester, was ranked in the number one spot.
The North East firms featured in the list were:
3. Wordnerds (Gateshead)
4. Nomad Digital (Newcastle)
17. Geek Talent (Sunderland)
22. Gavurin (Newcastle)
26. Tharsus (Northumberland)
39. Partnerize (Newcastle)
68. Refract (Newcastle)
71. Wubbleyou (North Shields)
80. Transmission Dynamics (Northumberland)
90. MSP (Northumberland)
Pete Daykin, CEO of Wordnerds, said: “We were both surprised and delighted when we heard Wordnerds placed third in the list.
“That we have built a software platform that so many big brands find value in and got it to market in these chaotic social and political times is testament to the amazing humans we work with at Wordnerds and the strength of the growing north east digital community.
“We are immensely grateful to the region’s business support networks, our friends at the region’s fantastic universities and our fellow founders, entrepreneurs and partners. We rely on them all every single day.”
The judging panel for the top 100 was made up of independent experts from a range of sectors and it included Stuart Lynn, TechNorthEast founder and former CTO at Sage.
He said: “Judging SmartTech 100 was an incredibly difficult task as nationally there were so many great companies to choose from.
“Whilst overall rankings are based on an aggregated score from all the judges and the public votes, personally I was looking for companies who used technology to solve real and challenging problems, companies whose business model would scale easily, and companies who conducted business with the highest level of ethics.
“I am delighted for all of the companies who took part and they all deserve massive recognition for their efforts to date.”
