Northumberland Golf Club welcomes new director

The Open Championship qualifier course, Northumberland Golf Club, has announced the appointment of a new director of golf operations to help take the club forward and raise its profile.

PGA-accredited golf professional and former Barclays Bank employee, Peter Simpson, has taken over the directorship as of January 1 this year.

Northumberland Golf Club was designed by renowned golf course architects Harry Shapland Colt and James Braid between 1898 and the 1920s.

With its British heritage design, the course regularly hosts national and regional championships from its unique location, weaving across and around Newcastle Racecourse in Gosforth Park.

Peter has previous experience of club management from his time at Alnmouth Golf Club and Whitley Bay Golf Club.

A golfer of 45 years, he is also currently secretary of the senior’s section of the Northumberland Union of Golf Clubs and represents the county at senior level.

Peter said: “I am delighted to join such a prestigious club as director of golf operations. The Northumberland Golf Club has a tremendous history and tradition and it is an honour to be part of the club moving into the new decade.

“I have received a great welcome from the members, and I am really looking forward to working with Jamie, the committee and the staff over the forthcoming months and years.

“We have wonderful facilities at the club both on the course and in the clubhouse and we aim to move the club forward, raise its profile and become the golf club of preference in the Newcastle area.”

Jamie Martin, chairman of Northumberland Golf Club, added: “We are delighted to welcome Peter as director of golf operations at Northumberland Golf Club following his very successful work at Alnmouth, Foxton.

“Peter comes with masses of experience and a reputation that is second to none. Northumberland Golf Club and its members look forward to working with Peter as we move into the new decade.”
