Council backs £48 million Gateshead Quayside hotel plans

Plans for a “transformational” £48 million hotel have been approved.

Gateshead Council has backed a nine-storey, 344-room Novotel and Ibis dual-branded Quayside venture.

Set for the corner of Quarryfield Road and Hawks Road, developer Ask:PATRIZIA says it will create upwards of 75-full-time jobs and 40 supply chain posts.

Officials add it will accommodate more than 200,000 visitor nights every year, adding an annual £13 million economic boost to the region.

The hotel was originally destined to sit among the planned Sage International Conference Centre scheme, between Sage Gateshead and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

Peter Udall, Gateshead Council’s strategic director for economy, innovation and growth, said: “With the transformational impact on the visitor economy these developments will bring, the region will need more accommodation to provide for the increased visitor numbers.

“This marks another milestone towards the delivery of these great regeneration schemes.”
