New College Durham builds for future with £1.7 million training base

A learning provider says it has laid foundations to nurture the builders of tomorrow after opening a £1.7 million base.

New College Durham has transformed an ex-factory into a training hub.

Described by bosses as a “construction centre of excellence”, the site, known as Promotion House and based in Langley Moor, includes teaching rooms, a practical learning area and breakout space.

The overhaul was led by Bowburn-headquartered Esh Construction, which says it hopes the venture will “inspire young people to explore a range of key career pathways”.

Andy Broadbent, New College Durham principal and chief executive, said: “It has been a privilege to work alongside Esh Construction on this project.

“It has once again shown there is no lack of skills in our region when it comes to planning and construction.

“One of our fundamental aims is to provide learners with the valuable skills and experience that local employers are asking for.”

The project follows Esh’s work last year to deliver the college’s £8.9 million Framwellgate Moor-based T.H.E Hub – Technical and Higher Education Hub – which features more than 20 teaching spaces including an early years foundation nursery.

Grant Watson, Esh construction manager, added: “We are proud to play our part in providing new learning environments for the next generation of construction workers.”
