Nissan in gear for pioneering self-driving vehicle project

Nissan is driving forward multi-million-pound work to create a self-driving car of tomorrow.

The Sunderland firm is heading the evolvAD project, which bosses say will develop a vehicle capable of safely travelling between residential, urban and rural environments.

The scheme has been backed by £2.3 million Government cash.

It will be delivered alongside Zenzic and Innovate UK.

Phillip Ironside, Zenzic head of innovation and programmes, said: “Our vision foresees the early commercial deployment of self-driving vehicles by 2025 to improve the movement of people and goods.

“This is only possible with a vibrant and sustainable UK-based connected and automated mobility supply chain.”

The Government has backed the venture through the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles Commercialising Connected and Automated Mobility: Supply Chain competition.
